Star Wars ComLINKS is a monthly link up by Anakin And His Angel centered around the galaxy far, far away. This month’s ComLINKS is about who we love to share Star Wars with.
In 2006, when I was 11 years old, I became obsessed with Star Wars. It was during a time in my life when everything seemed to be rather depressing. I had just moved to a new state and making friends was not my specialty. I’ve always been shy and introverted and as sad as this sounds, for a brief period, Star Wars was my only friend.
Over the years, I met people who had never seen Star Wars in their life and I was there to guide them. While my new friends took a liking to the movies, none of them obsessed over it like I did. They didn’t spend hours browsing Wookiepedia or the Jedi Council Forums, or reading the EU and watching The Clone Wars, or attending Star Wars Weekends and Celebration. I didn’t have anybody to talk to about background characters or send fan made music videos centered around the prequels to (…yup). It wasn’t until recently that I realized how deprived I was of a Star Wars companion during my childhood. Someone I could share this passion with who was willing to consume more than just the films and viewed Star Wars as more than just another nerdy fandom.
That person finally came into my life a year and a half ago, my boyfriend, Pedro.
In the fall of 2016, Pedro and I started dating and one thing he had known about me since our high school years as friends was that I loved Star Wars. He was familiar with the prequels and played a lot of Star Wars video games growing up. While he isn’t exactly as obsessive as I am, he at least doesn’t dislike Star Wars, which is kind of a deal breaker for me.
During a long phone call one night I told him I planned on going to Star Wars Celebration Orlando in April of the following year and that I had bought my badge months earlier. Little did I know, while I was explaining how great Celebration was, he was purchasing his badge and surprised me by sending a text of the confirmation. At that moment, I knew this was going to be the start of something special.
Weeks later we attended our first Star Wars movie premiere together… Rogue One. After the movie, I remember geeking out about it with him and just shouting over each other about all the things we loved. It was such a great feeling. I had never experienced that with anybody else. I remember feeling like I was in one of the many Star Wars podcasts I listen to. After so many years, I finally found someone who wanted to talk about Star Wars and learn more about the galaxy far, far away.
Then Celebration came around. SWCO was my third Celebration and Pedro’s first. He had only been to local cons before and had no idea how big of a deal it was. He woke up super early with me, waited in long lines to get wristbands, purchased his first lightsaber and got to see George Lucas, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill live on stage. After Celebration he found a new appreciation for Star Wars, which made me so happy. It truly is an amazing feeling being surrounded by people who love Star Wars. It’s infectious. Celebration is one of the greatest experiences ever and I highly recommend going, especially with friends or loved ones.
Since then we’ve attended Force Friday at midnight and are now proud parents of a Porg. I’ve been slowly introducing him to Ahsoka Tano (one of my favorite characters) through episodes of The Clone Wars and Rebels. We both LOVED The Last Jedi and saw it multiple times in the theater (he now randomly sends me Reylo fan art which makes me laugh). I even showed him all the embarrassing music videos I would watch on YouTube back in the day #NoShame. He’s been really supportive of my Star Wars blogging endeavors and looks forward to the next celebration and even cosplaying one day. I love that I can talk to him about characters and theories and show him all the things I want to buy and collect. He in return has introduced me to anime and video game culture, which I have grown to love and appreciate as well. Sharing the things you love with someone is such a wonderful way to understand them better and become closer.
Star Wars has always been a huge part of my life and sharing it with someone was something I always longed for but never had. It’s an incredible feeling to know that I finally found that person.
Happy Valentine’s Day and may the force be with you!
